We have multiple opportunities for students of all ages to learn and play! The Cape Symphony spring semester runs from January 31 to June 11, 2022. Check out all the new classes!
Beginning with the spring semester, we're moving our dance program to the YMCA Cape Cod at 2245 Iyannough Road, next door to the Cape Symphony’s Barnstable campus. We're very excited because the YMCA facilities offer more space and better flooring along with mirrors and sound.
A variety of dance classes are available for students from ages two years to adult. Ballet Buddies, Pre-Ballet, and Elementary Ballet focus on introducing students ages two to six to ballet terms and concepts and engaging in creative movement. In Ballet 1/2 for ages seven to 10, students learn placement, posture, and poise, and develop teamwork. Ballet 3/4 is for the dancer who has had previous ballet training or by invitation, and includes beginning pointe and other more advanced techniques. Pointe 1 is by invitation or audition only. A strong understanding of ballet is required before dancers are invited to learn the beginning of pointe technique. Ballet 5/6 – Pointe 2 is the most advanced class, for ages 12 and up with prior training. Pointe 2 dancers develop their technique while gaining flexibility and strength.
Beginning Teen Ballet is a new class for the preteen or teen who is new to ballet and eager to learn. The students will be introduced to combinations at the barre and in the center and moving across the floor, and learning how to count their music. Each class also incorporates stretching and conditioning, and these new dancers will learn about how ballet classes are structured and enjoy the beginnings of ballet technique and vocabulary.
Other dance classes for youth include Tap/Jazz/Tumble for ages four to seven, an introduction to different styles and ways of movement; Contemporary/Jazz 1 for ages seven to 12, in which students will develop strength, flexibility and style; and Hip-Hop for ages 11 and up, in which dancers will learn the basic elements of hip-hop dance, take on grooves, and work through combinations.
Adults ages 18 and up can choose from Adult Tap and Adult Ballet. In Adult Tap, students can participate either standing or from the seated position, and the class will cover introductions to various rhythms, a center warm-up, barre work, and combinations. Adult Ballet is a laid-back class for adults who wish to begin or continue the study of classical ballet. Classes will consist of barre exercises that focus on proper alignment and technique.
On the music side, the Cape Symphony Youth Orchestra is now accepting new student auditions for the spring semester. The Cape Symphony Youth Orchestra is a full symphonic orchestra designed for our community’s most advanced and dedicated young musicians. Audition information is available at capesymphony.org and students are urged to submit their audition videos before the first rehearsal of the new semester on February 12, 2022, although late submissions will still be accepted and reviewed. Participation in the Cape Symphony Youth Orchestra is free to any student taking private lessons at the Cape Symphony, thanks to the generous support of the Bilezikian Family Foundation and Hermann Foundation.
Intro to Piano classes for adults include Beginner and Intermediate levels. Children ages five to 11 can enroll in the Piano Explorers class, where a small group of students are taught in a positive atmosphere. All piano classes are offered at both the Barnstable and Falmouth campuses of the Cape Symphony.
In addition to weekly private lessons, Suzuki violin students ages three to 12 attend a weekly group class as part of the Suzuki method. The Suzuki Violin Group class is an important part of the learning process, bringing students of all levels together.
The Seaside String Ensemble is aimed at string students of all levels ages 18 and up. Participants develop technical and rhythmic skills through the ensemble experience, in a low-pressure setting. Seaside Strings meets in Barnstable.
Flute Choir is offered in Barnstable for intermediate and advanced students ages 18 and up. Being part of a flute ensemble offers players a different experience from a mixed ensemble. By focusing on intonation, rhythm, tone and technique, students learn how to blend within the ensemble to create a unique and beautiful sound.
We also offer private lessons in person at both Barnstable and Falmouth campuses, for youth and adults, from beginning through advanced levels in all major instruments and voice. Online lessons are also available using simple, user-friendly technology.
