Dance at the Cape Symphony is stronger than ever! Dancers of all ages, ranging from toddlers to seniors, are learning, growing, and having fun.
The recent Cape Symphony Dance Company recital, a showcase titled “The Truth About the World,” was a delight for the dancers and the audiences alike. The little cuties above and many others had a wonderful time showing what they've learned.
Ongoing classes include our youth program. Ballet starts with Ballet Buddies for our youngest dancers, and moves up through Pre-Ballet, Elementary Ballet, Ballet 1/2, Ballet 3/4, and Pointe 1, culminating with Ballet 5/6-Pointe 2.
We also offer kids a mix of other dance styles! Tot Hop is an energetic hip-hop-based class for the young mover age four to six who loves to bounce to the beat. Other options include Tap, Jazz & Tumble, Hip-Hop, Tap 1, and Contemporary/Jazz 1 & 2.
For adults looking for a fun way to get some exercise, we have multiple options. Adult Ballet Barre is an introductory class focused on work on the barre. This class is designed for the beginner who is looking to build strength, balance, poise, and coordination. We cover ballet terminology, develop an understanding of basic ballet techniques and work on musicality.
Adult Core Ballet is a laid-back class for adults who wish to begin or continue the study of classical ballet. Classes consist of barre exercises that focus on proper alignment and technique. Proper French vocabulary is introduced and used throughout each class.
We also have two levels of our Adult Tap class: Beginner and Intermediate. Classes cover introductions to various rhythms, a center warm-up, barre work, and combinations.
Our dance program is led by Michelle Chwastiak, a talented dance educator, choreographer, and performer who moved to the Cape last year from New York City, where she presented work by her dance company KRIMP Dance. At Dean College, Michelle was a recipient of the Drusilla Carlson Phelps Award for her talent in performance and a future in dance education.
The Cape Symphony dance classes meet at the YMCA Cape Cod at 2245 Iyannough Road, next door to the Cape Symphony’s Barnstable campus. The YMCA facilities offer wonderful space and excellent flooring along with mirrors and sound.
