The Cape Symphony presents Bravo Broadway in October 2022

Listening Links for "Bravo Broadway!"

We're bringing the lights of Broadway to Cape Cod on October 15 & 16. Artistic Director & Conductor Jung-Ho Pak selected these Listening Links for our upcoming show Bravo Broadway! especially for you. Enjoy!

Bravo Broadway! matches three veteran performers from Broadway and London’s West End who will take the audience on a journey through the decades of musical theater, with hits from top shows including The Music Man, Cabaret, Funny Girl, and Dear Evan Hansen.

Tony winner Idina Menzel performed “Don’t Rain On My Parade” at the 2008 Kennedy Center Honors for honoree Barbra Streisand. For purists, here’s the iconic number from the original Funny Girl soundtrack, sung by the incomparable Streisand.

Here’s a clip from the classic 1943 movie musical Girl Crazy. Mickey Rooney introduces Judy Garland’s character, accompanied by the real Tommy Dorsey and his orchestra. You can’t take your eyes off Judy at the height of her powers as she performs George Gershwin’s “I Got Rhythm”!

The Music Man returned to Broadway in 2021 with an extraordindary Tony-nominated revival led by Hugh Jackman and Sutton Foster. Here’s a video that combines two songs we’ll perform, “Ya Got Trouble” and “76 Trombones” with a bonus “Til There Was You” sung by the amazing Foster.

One of the Broadway numbers we’re doing may not be as familiar to you. It’s called “Vanilla Ice Cream” and comes from the show She Loves Me. Tony winner Laura Benanti was nominated again for her performance in this 2016 revival of the 1963 musical. While you may not recognize the name She Loves Me, you might know these movie names: The Shop Around the Corner, In the Good Old Summertime, and You Got Mail. That’s right, the Tom Hanks/Meg Ryan rom-com! Each tells the story of two shop employees who don’t know that they are each other’s romantic pen pals.

In 2017, Dear Evan Hansen won six Tony awards, including Best Musical, and broke down barriers. The Washington Post called it “One of the most remarkable shows in musical theater history,” the Los Angeles Times called it a “cultural phenomenon,” and the Boston Globe said that “Dear Evan Hansen feels both of-our-moment and built to last.” In this performance from the 2021 film version, Dear Evan Hansen star Julianne Moore sings the heartbreaking “So Big/So Small.”

English actress Ruthie Henshall played Fantine in the Les Miserables Tenth Anniversary Concert at the Royal Albert Hall in London. Her rendition of “I Dreamed a Dream” is widely considered to be the best of all time. Trivia: Henshall won an Olivier award for her performance in the West End production of She Loves Me – the same role that Laura Benanti plays in the video above.

In 2003, Hairspray won eight Tonys including Best Musical. The 2007 film starred Nikki Blonsky as Tracy Turnblad and also featured John Travolta, Michelle Pfeiffer, Christopher Walken, Zac Efron, and Queen Latifah. Enjoy the ensemble performance of “You Can’t Stop the Beat.”

Here’s a couple more treats for you: “Willkommen” famously performed by Joel Grey in his Oscar-winning performance as the Emcee in Bob Fosse’s 1972 movie Cabaret. And from 2002, “Not While I’m Around” from Sweeney Todd by Stephen Sondheim, performed by Patti LuPone and Neil Patrick Harris in “Sweeney Todd in Concert,” taped live in San Francisco with the San Francisco Orchestra.
