Cape Conservatory Online Summer Programs Offer Music for Adults and Youth

Virtual learning opportunities available for music lovers of all ages

HYANNIS, MA—June 29, 2020

This summer, despite the pandemic, the Cape Conservatory offers multiple opportunities for adults and youth to learn to sing and play instruments. Conservatory faculty have successfully held online classes throughout the spring and the virtual summer term begins July 6.

For students ages 13 through adult, options include a four-week “Get Started” series, with a choice of voice, guitar, or drums. Taught virtually using Google Classroom, each class will be a mix of group instruction, one-on-one sessions, and engaging video and written resources. Each class will take you from the very basics through the creation of a musical performance! Classes are designed for students ages 13 through adult.

Adults who want to sing with a group have two choices. Singer’s Workshop is for beginners who want to gain confidence in singing in a welcoming, supportive group. Encore Singers is for those with more experience who enjoy singing with an ensemble. Both groups will meet virtually.

The other virtual opportunity for adults is Intro to Piano, ideal for those who have always wanted to play. Students will learn to play several simple songs for fun and enjoyment.

Children ages five to 11 can enroll in the online Piano Explorers class. Small groups of students are taught in a fun, positive, enthusiastic atmosphere. Piano Explorers emphasizes ear training, keyboard skills, rhythm, phrasing, fingering, singing, staff reading, improvisation, and composition.

Throughout the summer, private lessons are offered for children and adults, from beginning through advanced levels in all major instruments and voice. Lessons are held virtually using simple, user-friendly technology, and the faculty creates engaging experiences that work well online. In-person private lessons are also available on a limited basis, as governmental regulations allow and as it is safe for students, faculty, and staff, at both the Barnstable and Falmouth campuses. The Conservatory has implemented a safety plan that includes limiting the building capacity to 25%, staggering class times, requiring masks, and disinfecting studios and instruments in-between lessons.

“We are pleased with the transition to online instruction conducted during the spring, and are excited to be offering a wide variety of music instruction virtually this summer,” said Jackie deRuyter, Director of the Cape Conservatory. “With the pandemic continuing to limit gatherings, this is the perfect time for people of all ages to learn something new and enjoy the benefits of making music,” she said.
