Cape Symphony & Conservatory Hires New Executive Director

Dr. Michael Albaugh comes to the Cape from The Philadelphia Orchestra to take new role

HYANNIS, MA—April 2, 2020

A trained musician, composer, administrator, and educator, Michael Albaugh has been selected to serve as Executive Director of the Cape Symphony & Conservatory.

Albaugh joins the organization during an unprecedented global emergency, and is already working to lead the Cape Symphony & Conservatory through this challenging time while laying the groundwork for an even stronger future.

In this position, Albaugh is charged with leading a team of professional staff and planning for future organizational growth and revenue enhancement, while building strong relationships with existing audiences and the larger community as a whole.

Most recently, Albaugh served as The Philadelphia Orchestra’s Director of Education and Community Initiatives, where he worked to advance the orchestra’s commitment to community service through its “HEAR” program focused on Health, Education, Access and Research. He grew the orchestra’s Free Neighborhood Concert series and the New Audience New Places program, and expanded the All-City Orchestra into the summer season with the creation of a brand new All-City Orchestra Summer Academy.

“I never expected to arrive on the Cape during a major health crisis; however, I did not hesitate for a moment. I’m tremendously excited to lead the Cape Symphony & Conservatory through the tough times we’re all facing right now, and on into its next chapter. With its excellent foundation and undeniable community support, the organization is poised to embrace the future,” said Albaugh. “I’m thrilled to have the opportunity to help steward the offerings of the Cape Symphony & Conservatory, and I look forward to growing our reach and impact on Cape Cod.”

Previously, Albaugh served as the Director of Education Operations at Jazz at Lincoln Center, providing leadership and operational guidance for departmental and program decisions that integrated education with advocacy, concerts, and touring. He created the Summer Jazz Academy at Bard College, a two-week residential high school jazz program, and the Junior Jazz Academy at Juilliard, a one-week day camp for middle school students.

Albaugh spent seven years as Director of Music at the renowned Interlochen Center for the Arts alongside Cape Symphony Artistic Director & Conductor Jung-Ho Pak. The Michigan non-profit draws talented young people from around the world to study music, theatre, visual arts, film, creative writing, and dance.

“Mike and I had a wonderful working relationship during our time together at Interlochen. I’m delighted to work with him again. His vision, leadership, and knowledge of the industry will take our organization to the next level,” said Pak.

“I’m excited to welcome Mike to the Cape Symphony & Conservatory family,” said Jackie deRuyter, Interim Director of the Cape Conservatory. “His experience in music education and administration, as well as his practical musicianship as a composer, will be invaluable to our education and outreach programs.”

Albaugh officially took on his new role on March 16. He received his B.A. in music education and guitar performance from West Liberty State College. He holds an M.M. in composition with an emphasis in music technology from Bowling Green State University and a D.M.A. in composition with an emphasis in music theory from West Virginia University.

“I’m so pleased that Mike is joining us at the Cape Symphony & Conservatory,” said Ellen Dickinson, Chair of the Board of Trustees. “He’s as passionate about our mission to inspire joy as we are, and is dedicated to advancing that mission alongside our team.”
