Cape Symphony Presents a Free Zoom Lecture on the Life and Music of Ludwig van Beethoven

Lecture features a guided listening of Beethoven’s Fifth Symphony

HYANNIS, MA—March 16, 2021

The Cape Symphony is pleased to announce a discussion of Beethoven’s life and guided listening of the Fifth Symphony to celebrate the anniversary of Beethoven’s passing and his indelible mark on global music culture. The free Zoom lecture is scheduled for Friday, March 26th from 1:00 PM to 2:30 PM.

“Beethoven is a cultural hero,” said Amber Broderick, Cape Symphony Teaching Artist and Falmouth Campus Manager/Registrar. “Beethoven’s tragic hearing loss combined with his superlative musical genius has made him a compelling figure throughout the past 250 years since his birth, and his compositions catalyzed the shift from music as mere entertainment to music as art.”

Beethoven passed away at the age of 56 on March 26, 1827, in Vienna. Broderick’s lecture will explore his life as well as his landmark work, the Fifth Symphony, and its recurring motif, perhaps the most recognizable musical figure of all time.

Broderick is a music historian, educator, and flutist with 15 years of performing and teaching experience. She received her M.M. in Music History from Bowling Green State University and B.A. in Music Education from Saginaw Valley State University. Her research includes Beethoven and Berlioz, women in music, opera and orchestral works, and musical life in 19th century Paris.

The Beethoven lecture does not require any prior music knowledge and is open to the first 100 registrations. Please reserve a spot by registering here or calling 508.540.0611 or 508.362.2772. Registrants will receive the Zoom link via email.
