On April 4, 1962, Jennings Butterfield led a fledgling group of amateur musicians along with a person the Cape Cod Standard-Times described as a “young American soprano,” who was the soon-to-be-famous Beverly Sills!

Over the past 60 years, much has changed, especially in terms of the professionalism, quality and creativity that are hallmarks of your Cape Symphony. Our impact upon the Cape and Islands has grown immensely, and our mission to inspire joy drives us now more than ever.

As we conclude our tribute to Beethoven’s 250th, we laud the genius who set the standard for perfection. We’ll go on a journey with Beethoven the man, the idealist, the revolutionary. Our brilliant principal string players will perform “Grosse Fuge,” one of the most visionary works for string quartet of the 19th century. This work is a daring emotional journey, titanic in scope and relentless in its energy. Pianist Mikael Darmanie will perform the shimmering “’Moonlight’ Sonata,” perhaps Beethoven’s most popular composition for the piano.
