Guest conductor Byron Stripling brings the spirit of New Orleans to the heart of Cape Cod

Cape Symphony’s first CapePOPS! concert of the 2023/24 season, “Byron Stripling & Friends,” is a program of beloved American jazz standards led by renowned conductor and trumpeter Byron Stripling on October 21 and 22, 2023. Jazz artist and Grammy nominee Carmen Bradford will perform vocals.
Byron Stripling is currently Artistic Director and Conductor of the widely acclaimed Columbus Jazz Orchestra. A pops orchestra favorite across the United States and Canada, he is known for his virtuosic trumpet sounds, jazzy vocals, and engaging rapport with his audience. He has performed with Boston Pops, National Symphony, New York Pops, Toronto Symphony, and many others, and has been a featured soloist on the PBS television special “Evening at Pops” with conductors John Williams and Keith Lockhart. He has recorded and played with The Lincoln Center Jazz Orchestra, The Carnegie Hall Jazz Band, and the bands of Dizzy Gillespie, Dave Brubeck, and Woody Herman, among others. Stripling attended the Eastman School of Music and the Interlochen Arts Academy.
Guest vocalist Carmen Bradford is a 2022 Grammy nominee and recipient of the Los Angeles Jazz Society’s Jazz Vocalist Award. Ms. Bradford performs with passion, warmth, and technical skill with big bands and symphony orchestras around the world. Discovered at 22 by William “Count” Basie, she was the featured vocalist in the Count Basie Orchestra for nine years. She has since performed and recorded with a long list of jazz luminaries and orchestras, and has an illustrious career as a solo artist. Her voice has appeared on several albums and in television, film, and theater. She continues to tour with The Count Basie Orchestra.
Byron Stripling and Carmen Bradford have joined forces to perform tributes to Louis Armstrong and Ella Fitzgerald to rave reviews. The program for “Byron Stripling & Friends” features jazz standards from New Orleans and Tin Pan Alley, made famous by Louis Armstrong, Ella Fitzgerald, Sarah Vaughan, Billie Holiday, Bing Crosby, Judy Garland, Frank Sinatra and other legends.
