Secret Planet Cape Cod returns to the Chatham Orpheum Theater on Thursday, October 1 with the hypnotic sound of Club d’Elf. For more than 27 years, Club d’Elf has helped audiences lose track of time with its shape-shifting fusion of Moroccan trance, dub, electronica, jazz, and improvised funk. Built around bassist and composer Mike Rivard, the band creates performances that begin with a groove and open into something older, stranger, and completely unbound by genre.
Each show features a rotating cast of musicians from Boston, New York, and beyond, creating a constantly shifting musical ecosystem where trance forms the central core. Through the influence of longtime member and Casablanca native Brahim Fribgane, Moroccan trance music became deeply embedded in the band’s DNA. Though Fribgane passed away in 2024, his spirit remains central to the sound, especially through Rivard’s commanding sintir work, which he studied under Fribgane and Gnawa masters Hassan Hakmoun and Mahmoud Guinia.
Club d’Elf’s new album, Loon and Thrush, was recorded live in the studio with minimal overdubs, capturing the raw, improvisatory energy that defines the band. Built largely around Rivard originals, the album also continues the group’s tradition of honoring major influences, including Moroccan-infused interpretations of Grateful Dead classics “Bird Song” and “New Speedway Boogie.” The theme of flight spans the record through birds, wandering spirits, and Brahim Fribgane's enduring influence.
Club d'Elf is brought to you by Secret Planet Cape Cod, a co-production of Cape Symphony Presents and Narrowland Music formed to bring extraordinary global artists to our community, celebrating music that connects cultures and ignites new traditions.
