Join Cape Symphony Presents for a Pride month celebration! Brian Calhoon will perform his award-winning Marimba Cabaret, featuring a great mix of show tunes and pop covers re-imagined for marimba and voice. Julian Loida will join Brian on vibraphone. Performances will be at Harvest Gallery in Dennis on Thursday, June 6 at 4:30 PM and 7:00 PM, and at Cape Symphony’s Falmouth campus on Saturday, June 8 at 7:00 PM.
Originally from the San Francisco Bay Area, Brian Calhoon is a multi-faceted percussionist and singer based in Provincetown, MA, where he and his husband Tom own and operate the Brasswood Inn. He holds degrees from the San Francisco Conservatory of Music and The Boston Conservatory, and is a Marimba One artist.
Brian has performed his unique covers to enchanted audiences from coast to coast and at home on Provincetown’s bustling Commercial Street at the Brasswood Inn’s popular porch concerts. He’s presented Marimba Cabaret in San Francisco, Washington D.C., Portland, and Boston.
Julian Loida is a percussionist, composer, producer, and a familiar presence on our Falmouth campus as Cape Symphony’s Programming and Innovation Manager. He performs jazz, folk, and classical music, collaborating with dancers, visual artists, songwriters/composers, and musicians of all stripes.
So, what’s a Marimba Cabaret, exactly? Each performance is different, but delighted audience members identify common elements: “Beautiful and soulful, transcending, and funny.” “Quirky, fun, and unexpected!” “You come away feeling very great about life.” In these upcoming performances, Brian and Julian will pay homage to musical theater greats Stephen Sondheim and Jerry Herman, as well as pop icons Taylor Swift, Demi Lovato, and others. There’s something for everyone in this upbeat musical coming-out story. A little birdie told us to look for something from Barbie in this rendition! The show might bring a tear to your eye… but in a good way, we promise.
