Cape Symphony Presents: Faces of Celebration

Faces of Celebration: Mike Sullivan & Friends in Concert

Cape Symphony Presents is delighted to partner with Twenty Summers to bring you Faces of Celebration, an innovative performance by Mike Sullivan and Friends of beloved Stephen Sondheim repertoire, Irish folk music, and other choral works on June 12, 2024 at 7:00 PM at Hawthorne Barn in Provincetown.

Mike Sullivan is an artist and musician whose work includes sculptural headwear made with materials ranging from natural objects to jewelry, stained glass, and broken mirrors. With performers wearing stunningly beautiful masks and custom clothing designs, Faces of Celebration explores storytelling and creative expression at the intersection of music, fashion, and art.

Why masks? “Masks are a means by which human groupings attempt to communicate their dignity and sense of purpose,” writes museum director Gary Edson in Masks and Masking: Faces of Tradition and Belief Worldwide. This concept resonates strongly with Sullivan, who creates and uses masks as an extension of himself and a way to communicate with the world. The effect is deeply moving.

This upcoming concert is especially exciting. “Faces of Celebration will be my first experience integrating mask work and musical performances,” says Mike. “The event will invite audiences to reflect on themes of self expression and celebration of individuality within community.” The performers’ masks enhance the experience, offering “a vast experience to engage with, allowing for participants and audience members to interpret the practice with their own individuality, bridging a deeper connection to the natural world, each other, and within ourselves.”

Join us for this incomparable performance in two acts by local and visiting singers and instrumentalists. Faces of Celebration will be held at Hawthorne Barn, 29 Miller Hill Road, Provincetown on June 12 at 7:00 PM. Tickets are $35, available through Eventbrite.

“Cape Symphony Presents” is an eclectic showcase of world-class music that transcends genres, shares stories, and brings people together at venues across the Cape and Islands.
