One of the composers we’re featuring in Passport to America: The Immigrant Story is not just alive, he’s actively working and demonstrating the unique cultural richness that immigrants bring to our country.

Franz Waxman was a Jewish composer who started out writing scores in the thriving and much-admired German film industry. His first original Hollywood score was James Whale’s memorable Bride of Frankenstein in 1935.

Born in Switzerland in 1880, Ernest Bloch emigrated to the U.S. in 1916 with his wife and three children, after studying music in Belgium, Germany, and France. Working as a teacher and director of music schools, he became a U.S. citizen in 1924.

In September’s Passport to America: The Immigrant Story concert, we’re featuring four incredibly talented composers who brought their gifts with them to this country and gave new richness to American music.

Tonight’s free outdoor concert, Symphony at the Seashore, features one very special original song by Stephen Schaefer.
