Reimagined April 1962 program features guest star Jon Nakamatsu
HYANNIS, MA—March 10, 2022
To celebrate the 60th anniversary of the orchestra’s first performance, the Cape Symphony, under the direction of Jung-Ho Pak, Artistic Director & Conductor, will present a reimagining of the April 1962 program, Happy Anniversary, Cape Symphony! on April 2 and 3, 2022.
Returning to the Cape Symphony stage for the first time since 2015 will be fan favorite pianist Jon Nakamatsu. Nakamatsu is also celebrating a major anniversary: 25 years since his stunning Gold Medal victory at the Van Cliburn International Piano Competition. Nakamatsu is well-known locally as the co-artistic director of the Cape Cod Chamber Music Festival. Jon will perform the masterpiece most associated with Van Cliburn himself: Tchaikovsky’s iconic Piano Concerto No. 1.
“Over the past 60 years, much has changed, especially in terms of the professionalism and creativity that are hallmarks of the region’s only orchestra,” said Jung-Ho Pak. “Today’s talented Cape Symphony musicians and I have a wonderful opportunity to recreate the original 1962 concert with our own spirit of joyous performance and high quality that our fans have come to expect.”
The anniversary celebration includes a wide variety of delightful music from the original concert, such as Mozart’s Impresario Overture, Fantasia on Greensleeves by Ralph Vaughan Williams, and Espana Rhapsody by French composer Emmanuel Chabrier, based on his travels through Spain. Two pieces for soprano will feature rising star Abigail Rethwisch: the acrobatic “Una Voce Poco Fa (A voice a little while ago)” by Gioachino Rossini from The Barber of Seville, and the sublime “Depuis le Jour (Since the Day)” from Louise by Gustave Charpentier.
“Many things have changed since 1962, but one thing hasn’t: Cape Cod still needs its own orchestra. The Cape Symphony brought beautiful music to people of all ages then and continues to do so today – bigger and better than ever!” said Michael Albaugh, Cape Symphony Executive Director. “Looking back over the past 60 years, I’m so proud to be at the helm of this organization at this moment in time. We have big plans and wonderful years ahead of us!”
To ensure the health and well-being of its customers, staff, and community, the Cape Symphony has put the following safeguards in place for all concerts: all attendees will be required to wear a mask and all attendees are required to provide proof of vaccination at the concert. Children ages six and up are welcome to attend but they must follow the health and safety policies. If the child is not fully vaccinated, they must have a negative test result. COVID-19 tests must be administered by a third party. Self-administered tests (like an at-home kit from a drugstore) will not be accepted. All Cape Symphony staff and musicians have provided proof of vaccination, and will wear masks at the concert (note that the wind players will not be masked on stage). Visit capesymphony.org/covid-19 for full details on the Cape Symphony’s health and safety policies.
The Cape Symphony is proud to present Happy Anniversary, Cape Symphony! on Saturday, April 2 at 7:30 p.m. and Sunday, April 3 at 3:00 p.m. at the Barnstable Performing Arts Center, 744 West Main Street, Hyannis.
