Concert will feature legendary singer/songwriter Jimmy Webb and tribute to Glen Campbell
HYANNIS, MA—September 12, 2017
The Cape Symphony’s annual New Year’s Day Party will have a special touch with the debut of legendary songwriter Jimmy Webb, famous for writing many hits including “Up, Up and Away” and “MacArthur Park.”
He has had numerous successful collaborations throughout his long career, and most famously with the incomparable Glen Campbell. The Cape Symphony will honor the memory of the late Campbell with a special appearance by his daughter Ashley, an incredibly talented singer.
Webb is the only artist to have won a GRAMMY Award for music, lyrics and orchestration, and he’s also the youngest person to be inducted into the Songwriters hall of Fame. This extraordinarily talented composer and lyricist rubbed elbows with some of the world’s most legendary performers including Louis Armstrong, Paul McCartney and even Elvis. But one of his closest friendships and musical partnerships was with Glen Campbell.
“When it came to friendship Glen was the real deal. He spoke my name from ten thousand stages. He was my big brother, my protector, my co-culprit, my John crying in the wilderness. Nobody liked a Jimmy Webb song as much as Glen,” wrote Webb on his Facebook page after the passing of Campbell on August 8.
Webb was the writer behind many of Campbell’s greatest hits including, “By the Time I Get To Phoenix,” “Wichita Lineman,” and “Galveston,” all of which will be presented at the New Year’s Day Party. Campbell’s daughter Ashley will join Webb and sing some of the songs that made her father a superstar.
“We had booked Jimmy to perform with us on New Year’s Day earlier this year, and because of his strong connection to Glen, we invited his daughter Ashley to perform with us as homage to her father. We were all saddened at the loss of this musical great, but are honored to be presenting an uplifting, inspiring tribute to him. It is truly a dream come true for me to be able to share the stage with Jimmy Webb, one of the most prolific and artistic songwriters of American pop music,” said Artistic Director & Conductor Jung-Ho Pak.
Of course, the New Year’s Day Party wouldn’t be complete without some signature favorites including “Auld Lang Syne,” “Blue Danube” and the “Radetzky March.”
Another annual tradition associated with the New Year’s Day Party is the Vienna Café. Delectable Viennese pastries made by Gourmet Caterers will be available for purchase from 1:30 to 2:45 PM in the senior cafeteria at the Barnstable Performing Arts Center.
The Cape Symphony is proud to feature Jimmy Webb and Ashley Campbell in its New Year’s Day Party on January 1, 2018 at 3:00 PM.
