Cape Symphony Announces the Cape Symphony Youth Orchestra’s (CSYO) Summer Chamber Program

Weeklong music camps to be held in Barnstable and Falmouth

HYANNIS, MA—May 5, 2021

The Cape Symphony is pleased to announce that registration is open for the Cape Symphony Youth Orchestra’s (CSYO) Summer Chamber Program, weeklong music camps focused on the practice of small ensemble performance.

Students ages ten to 21 who play winds (flute, oboe, clarinet, bassoon, trumpet, trombone, horn, euphonium, and tuba) or strings (violin, viola, cello, bass, and harp) are eligible (students just outside of the age range should still inquire). Students will be divided into ensemble groups by age range: Sinfonietta for ages ten to 14, Chamber Orchestra for ages 14 and older.

The CSYO Summer Chamber Program will take place from July 12 – 17, 2021 in Falmouth and from July 19 – 24, 2021 in Barnstable. The program will run Monday through Friday from 9:30 AM – 12:30 PM. On Fridays, a masterclass will be held from 1:00 PM – 2:30 PM, with a guest artist concert in the evening. On Saturdays, a dress rehearsal is scheduled for noon and a concert featuring the program participants will be presented at 1:00 PM.

“This program is special for young musicians who are used to playing in orchestras or concert band where there are many students sharing the same part,” said Michael Albaugh, Cape Symphony Executive Director. “In a chamber setting, each musician is the only representative of their instrument in the ensemble. The students will divide into small ensembles and have the opportunity to develop their performance skills.”

CSYO faculty, with decades of professional performance and teaching experience, include Mark Miller, CSYO Conductor and Cape Symphony principal clarinetist, Elizabeth Doriss, CSYO Winds Instructor and former Cape Symphony principal oboist, and David Gable, CSYO Strings Coordinator/Instructor and professional freelance violinist.

The Falmouth guest artist masterclass and performance will feature Quartett Giocosa, made up of Cape Symphony musicians Heather Goodchild Wade, principal second violin, Irina Fainkichen, violinist, Irina Naryshkova, violist, and Elizabeth Schultze, cellist and Cape Symphony teaching artist. The Barnstable guest artist masterclass and performance will feature Meadowlark Trio: Janny Joo, Cape Symphony assistant principal second violin, Tim Paek, cellist, and April Sun, pianist.

The tuition for the CSYO Summer Chamber Program is $300 per week, which includes the full week of instruction, masterclass, and one ticket to the guest artist concert. Students may participate in one or both weeks. Registration and a detailed description of the CSYO Summer Chamber Program can be found on the Cape Symphony website.
