Cape Symphony Presents welcomes two of Cape Cod’s exceptional classical artists, award-winning pianist Ana Glig and Cape Symphony Principal Cellist Jacques Lee Wood, for an intimate evening of breathtaking chamber music at the Cape Cod Museum of Art. Beginnings & Farewells: Strauss & Chopin brings to life two deeply expressive works written at remarkably different moments in their composers’ lives, offering audiences a rare opportunity to experience these extraordinary musicians up close.
The evening begins with the Cello Sonata in F Major, Op. 6 by Richard Strauss, a work of youthful confidence, sweeping Romantic melodies, and exhilarating virtuosity. Strauss completed the sonata at just 19 years old, years before the operas and orchestral tone poems that would make him one of the towering musical figures of his generation. Even here, the brilliance, drama, and larger-than-life musical personality of the young composer are unmistakable.
At the other end of a great career stands Frédéric Chopin’s Cello Sonata in G Minor, Op. 65. Completed during the final years of Chopin’s life and published in 1847, the sonata is one of his rare major chamber works and among the last compositions he brought to publication. Intimate, searching, passionate, and unmistakably Chopin, the piece places cello and piano in an extraordinary musical conversation filled with lyricism and emotional depth. Together, the works create the arc of Beginnings & Farewells: the exuberant voice of a young Richard Strauss discovering the composer he would become, paired with the mature voice of Frédéric Chopin looking back through one of his final masterpieces.
