Condutor-less concert features Concertmaster Jae Cosmos Lee
HYANNIS, MA—March 12, 2019
When the conductor’s away, the orchestra will play. The Cape Symphony’s Beethoven Unleashed is a first-ever conductor-less performance featuring Concertmaster Jae Cosmos Lee and internationally acclaimed pianist Martina Filjak.
An intimate orchestra will perform three of Beethoven’s most beautiful pieces including “32 Variations in C Minor,” “Piano Concerto No. 3” and “Symphony No. 1.”
“Only really exceptional orchestras can attempt this because it requires truly sensitive musicians,” said Cape Symphony Artistic Director & Conductor Jung-Ho Pak. “The key to performing conductor-less is watching and listening. I think it will be an incredible experience to hear this music played so masterfully, while watching the subtle communication between the musicians on stage.”
Filjak, who is a returning guest artist for the Cape Symphony, will lead the orchestra from the piano for the distinctively dramatic “Piano Concerto No. 3.” Since winning the Beethoven Prize at the Cleveland International Piano Competition, she’s been widely praised for her technical mastery as well as for her charismatic personality and magnetic stage presence. She will take the stage alone for “32 Variations in C Minor.”
Cape Symphony violinist Jae Cosmos Lee will lead the orchestra from his Concertmaster seat for the precise and dramatic “Symphony No. 1.” Lee, whose Boston-based chamber music ensemble A Far Cry was recently nominated for two GRAMMYs, excels in building relationships with his fellow musicians, allowing them to trust his instincts and lead seamlessly.
“I think this is one of the most anticipated moments in the Cape Symphony’s history because our audiences have fallen in love with our musicians over the years, and now they’ll finally get to experience them in such a uniquely direct and personal way,” said Pak.
