CapePOPS! Concert features Broadway performers
HYANNIS, MA—January 23, 2018
Three high-energy Broadway performers will help the Cape Symphony transform the concert stage into a Broadway theater for Broadway Rocks! featuring guest conductor Peter Mansfield on Saturday, February 17 (3:00 PM and 7:30 PM) and Sunday, February 18 (3:00 PM).
From The Lion King and Frozen to Mamma Mia and Jersey Boys, Broadway Rocks! will feature some of the most famous songs from musical theater’s resurgence over the last decade. In addition, the Cape Symphony will perform three numbers from brand new Broadway shows premiering in 2018. The first is “Proud Mary” from a show called TINA, a bio-musical about the legendary Tina Turner, and “Come Sail Away” and “Stairway to Heaven” from ROCKTOPIA, a new Broadway show premiering this spring that fuses the most epic rock songs with the likes of Mozart, Beethoven and Tchaikovsky.
The third CapePOPS! concert in the 2017/18 season will have guest conductor Peter Mansfield at the podium. Native Bostonian Mansfield is a frequent guest conductor, graduate of Harvard College and professor of musical theater at Boston Conservatory at Berklee College of Music. For more than three decades, he has served the Boston Pops Orchestra as arranger, orchestrator, pianist, and music coordinator in Symphony Hall and on tour. As a lifelong summer resident of the Cape, Mansfield is particularly excited for his debut guest conductor role with the Cape Symphony.
A Broadway show wouldn’t be complete without Broadway stars, so the Cape Symphony has invited LaKisha Jones, Anne Runolfsson and Rob Evan to perform. Jones is known to millions as a top four finalist during the 2007 season of “American Idol,” but since her TV days, Jones has built a solid career on stage. She segued from “Idol” to Broadway where she played two roles in the Oprah Winfrey-produced, Tony Award-winning musical, The Color Purple: that of “church lady,” and of the pivotal character “Sophia.” For Broadway Rocks! Jones will give electrifying performances for tunes like “Natural Woman” from Beautiful and “I Will Always Love You” from The Bodyguard.
Anne Runolfsson recently completed a two-year run on Broadway as the tempestuous diva Carlotta Giudacelli in Andrew Lloyd Webber’s Phantom of the Opera, the longest running show in Broadway history. She’s also performed in Les Miserables, The Secret Garden and James Joyce’s The Dead. The LA Times called her “a savvy and thoughtful performer,” and she’ll put her melodious stamp on popular Broadway hits including “Good Morning Baltimore” from Hairspray and “Defying Gravity” from Wicked.
Rounding out the vocal talent for Broadway Rocks! is Rob Evan who has performed in seven leading roles on the New York stage including in the original Broadway cast of Jekyll & Hyde, playing the title roles for three years and over 1,000 performances. He is also a member of the multi-platinum-selling rock band, the Trans-Siberian Orchestra. Evan also conceived, co-created and stars in ROCKTOPIA so he’ll be performing those two numbers along with “Can’t Take My Eyes Off Of You” from Jersey Boys.
The Cape Symphony is proud to feature guest conductor Peter Mansfield and vocalists LaKisha Jones, Anne Runolfsson and Rob Evan in Broadway Rocks! on Saturday, February 17 at 3:00PM and 7:30PM and Sunday, February 18 at 3:00 PM at the Barnstable Performing Arts Center, 744 West Main Street, Hyannis.
