Cape Symphony Orchestra Concert Celebrates Our Ocean

WEST BARNSTABLE, MA—May 22, 2024

Masterpiece concert will be presented in collaboration with Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution

Cape Symphony’s “Our Ocean” concerts on June 15 and 16, 2024, presented in collaboration with Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution (WHOI), bring arts and sciences together to celebrate the majesty of the sea and champion its protection.

The concert program includes works by Felix Mendelssohn, Alan Hovhaness, Benjamin Britten and Claude Debussy, all inspired by the magnificence of the sea.

WHOI scientists will give talks, free to concert ticketholders, at the Barnstable Performing Arts Center one hour before each performance. On Saturday, June 15, scientists from the Sea Grant Program will round out Cape Cod Coastal Resilience Week with three local stories of vulnerability, strength, and resilience in the face of rising seas, erosion and flooding. Though these stories, we’ll refresh our community spirit and renew our sense of empowerment toward a strong, resilient future. On Sunday, June 16, members of WHOI’s Reef Solutions Team will discuss innovative techniques being used to save corals in crisis, including what coral sounds and acoustics can tell us about the health of reefs. Marine Biologist Dr. Aran Mooney and Microbial Ecologist Dr. Amy Apprill will share their team’s fascinating approaches to reversing the global decline of reef ecosystems.

Award-winning guest conductor Carolyn Watson returns to the Cape Symphony podium for these performances (audiences will remember her from Remember When Rock Was Young: The Elton John Experience and Passport Down Under). Watson is Music Director of the La Porte County Symphony Orchestra, Principal Guest Conductor of the Kansas City Chamber Orchestra, and Director of Orchestras at the University of Illinois. The twin themes of oceanic magnificence and fragility are deeply important to her. In her role at UI, she created a Climate Change Awareness concert performed in April 2024 by the UI Symphony Orchestra in collaboration with the UI Department of Climate, Meteorology, and Atmospheric Sciences (CliMAS).

Cape Symphony is proud to present “Our Ocean” at the Barnstable Performing Arts Center, 744 West Main Street, Hyannis on Saturday, June 15 at 7:30 PM and Sunday, June 16 at 3:00 PM. The concert is approximately two hours long, including a 20-minute intermission.
