Cotuit Center for the Arts featured in Play; Orchestra shines in Shostakovich No. 5
HYANNIS, MA - April 27, 2017
It’s not often when theater and symphony can collide in the most spectacular way, but the Cape Symphony has combined forces with the Cotuit Center for the Arts for an epic performance of “Every Good Boy Deserves Favor.”
This one-act play by creative giants Tom Stoppard and André Previn takes place in and around the orchestra and features two main characters. The first is a political dissident declared insane by the government, the second a lunatic who believes he has his own orchestra. The darkly humorous story unfolds with six local actors: Troy Davies as Ivan, Rob Anderson as Alexander, Tyler Brackett as Sasha, Cleo Zani as the Doctor, Susan Winslow as the Teacher, and Garry Mitchell as the Colonel. The orchestra plays a major role as well, taking part as the “imaginary” orchestra only the insane Ivan can see – and hear. “Every Good Boy Deserves Favor” captures the imagination, and weaves a powerful story of political freedom and the right of free expression.
This first-ever collaboration with the Cotuit Center for the Arts will be followed by one of the most famous Russian symphonies of all time, Symphony No. 5 by Dmitri Shostakovich.
“With both comical, almost cartoonish elements in the second movement and the gorgeous musical melodies of the second movement, to the powerful march in the fourth, this symphony is all encompassing and perfectly highlights the theme of freedom of expression,” explained Artistic Director and Conductor Jung-Ho Pak.
This concert is one of dozens of events being hosted as part of the ArtSpring Cape Cod Festival, a grass roots celebration of arts and culture focusing on the theme of “Freedom of Expression.”
“Audiences will leave this performance not only in awe of the local talent here on Cape Cod, but also having truly had a thought-provoking and inspiring experience,” said Pak.
The Cape Symphony is proud to present Freedom, Expression & Hope which highlights the talent of the Cape Symphony musicians and the Cotuit Center for the Arts on Saturday, May 6 & Sunday, May 7. For more information or to purchase tickets visit capesymphony.org or call 508-362-1111.
