Concert features powerhouse line-up of vocal talent in musical showstopper
HYANNIS, MA—January 30, 2020
The Tony Awards celebrate excellence on Broadway, and the Cape Symphony’s The Tonys: Broadway’s Best on February 22 & 23 will highlight the most notable award winners through the decades.
“When I hear the word “Tony,” I think of show-stopping, unforgettable songs that are forever part of Broadway history,” said Jung-Ho Pak, Artistic Director & Conductor. “This show is a tour through time, from the classics to all of today’s hits. We’ve got eight incredible professional singers that will present a dazzling array of famous characters and stories. Best of all, we have an expert conductor, Peter Mansfield. What an evening!”
Mansfield is no stranger to the Cape Symphony stage having made his guest conducting debut with “Broadway Rocks,” and conducting “The Very Best of Rodgers & Hammerstein” last June. Native Bostonian has served the Boston Pops Orchestra as arranger, orchestrator, pianist, and music coordinator in Symphony Hall and on tour for more than three decades. As a lifelong summer resident of the Cape, Mansfield is especially delighted to be back on the podium with the Cape Symphony.
The Tonys: Broadway’s Best features eight amazing vocalists singing hits like “Sit Down, You’re Rockin’ The Boat” from Guys and Dolls and “Seventy-Six Trombones” from The Music Man as well as contemporary numbers like “You Can’t Stop the Beat” from Hairspray, directed by Russell Garrett, a Boston-based director and choreographer. He has staged extensively in New England including Hairspray and The Full Monty at Theatre by the Sea in Rhode Island and in Boston with Camelot and Little Shop of Horrors at New Repertory Theatre.
“The Cape Symphony prides itself on incorporating details into each presentation that help the music burst off the stage,” explains Pak. “Russell is going to help us present these experienced musical theatre performers, and these famous hits, in the most impactful and entertaining way. I’m certain this will be a terrific experience for everyone who loves Broadway,” said Pak.
Vocalists for the show include:
Massachusetts native Jonathan Acorn has had the good fortune to perform on many of New England’s most beloved stages. Most recently, he played the Emerson Colonial Theatre in the world premiere production of Dolly Parton’s Smoky Mountain Christmas Carol. Jonathan has a BFA in Musical Theatre from Emerson College.
Darren Bunch has performed Off-Broadway in Ben, Virginia and Me: The Liberace Musical and City of Light. Other favorite roles include Benny in In The Heights, Paul in Kiss Me, Kate and Andy in The Scottsboro Boys. Darren is a Boston native and graduate of The Boston Conservatory of Music.

Mark also played the title role in the U.S. premiere of a new musical adaptation of Onegin last year.
