Concert features composers inspired by famous Don Quixote novel
HYANNIS, MA—March 6, 2018
GRAMMY-award winning cellist Zuill Bailey and a dazzling array of virtuosic solos from Cape Symphony orchestra principals will be at the forefront of the upcoming Impressions of Don Quixote concert next month.
Bailey’s YouTube performance videos have thousands of views showcasing his pure talent and incomparable ability to transform music into a language that touches the soul and hangs powerfully long after the notes are finished.
He and New-Bedford based baritone Philip Lima will help the orchestra tell the story of Don Quixote, better known as “the man from La Mancha,” as explored by three well-known composers: Richard Strauss, Maurice Ravel and Georg Philipp Telemann.
“The Don Quixote tone poem by Strauss is one of the most difficult and colorful pieces the symphony has ever presented. The virtuosity demanded by the orchestra is a ’10.’ The orchestra has never been tested like this before, with lots of solos for the principal players. It’s like an opera for the orchestra,” said Artistic Director and Conductor Jung-Ho Pak.
Ravel’s passionate “Don Quixote to Dulcinea” calls upon the gorgeous baritone voice of Lima to tell three unique stories based on Don Quixote’s quest for love, from the undying declaration to his boisterous drinking song. For Telemann’s “Don Quixote Suite,” the orchestra’s skills will once again be in demand for this Baroque show piece featuring six songs in the style of Baroque dances.
“Telemann’s Baroque suite requires incredible flexibility on the orchestra’s part to sound like period instruments from the 18th century. Playing in an early music style is something we love to do,” said Pak.
The Cape Symphony is proud to feature Zuill Bailey and Philip Lima in Impressions of Don Quixote on Saturday, April 7 at 7:30 p.m. & Sunday, April 8 at 3:00 p.m. at the Barnstable Performing Arts Center, 744 West Main Street.
