Cape Symphony Presents “Magnificent Mozart”

A rare performance of two of the composer’s most famous works

HYANNIS, MA—October 16, 2018

The Cape Symphony dives deep into two of Mozart’s masterpieces in a first-ever Masterpiece concert presentation of the delightful “Eine kleine nachtmusik,” and the powerful and moving Requiem that was his final work.

Magnificent Mozart features Cambridge-based Musica Sacra and four guest soloists on Saturday, November 3 and Sunday, November 4.

“There are very few composers in history that were as prolific at such an extremely high level as Mozart,” explained Artistic Director & Conductor Jung-Ho Pak. “We will perform two of Mozart’s most beloved pieces, which are also polar opposites in terms of theme and emotion. These extremes remind us that Mozart was a true genius in his ability to accomplish both so masterfully.”

The concert begins with the light-hearted, purely entertaining “Eine kleine nachtmusik,” translated as “a little night music.” Pak observed, “It’s the most famous serenade Mozart ever wrote, but because it is so well-known, ironically it is rarely performed on the concert stage.” Highly recognized from modern commercials and movies like Tim Burton’s Batman and Charlie’s Angels, the work has become too “popular” for orchestras.

“By placing ‘Eine kleine nachtmusik’ side by side with another Mozart masterpiece, I wanted it to have the respect that it deserves,” explained Pak.

The showpiece of Magnificent Mozart is the Requiem. Mozart began writing it in 1791, but died prior to completing it. Pak will entertain the audience with the myths and realities surrounding the Requiem, including the fascinating stories of other composers that tried their hand at finishing it.

“I like to present things as authentically as possible. I want to delve in as deeply as I can to capture the original intent of the piece by recreating the sound and force of the original,” said Pak.

To help with that goal, Pak has called upon Cambridge-based Musica Sacra directed by Mary Beekman. The group specializes in early music including Baroque, medieval and renaissance spanning five centuries. Their sound has been called “gifted,” “breathtaking,” and “uncommonly fresh and direct.”

“This choral group has an innate understanding of how their voices should work with each other in a conversation, as opposed to the big homogenous style of choral performance that became more prevalent in the 19th century,” said Pak.

Another unique aspect of this concert is that the orchestra and chorus will be moved much closer to the audience, breaking down the invisible “fourth wall” and making attendees feel a part of the music-making process.

“For the person attending, if they know the piece, they will be hearing it for the first time with this exciting clarity. And for the person who does not know it, I’m hoping this approach will make the music of Mozart feel very relevant, very urgent, very human,” explained Pak.

The Cape Symphony is proud to feature Musica Sacra, soprano Chelsea Basler, baritone Thomas Jones, tenor Michael Kuhn and mezzo-soprano Krista River in Magnificent Mozart on Saturday, November 3 at 7:30 PM & Sunday, November 4 at 3:00 PM. at the Barnstable Performing Arts Center, 744 West Main Street, Hyannis.
