Former “American Idol” contestant “wowed” audiences in Broadway Rocks, returning for Jan. 1 concert
HYANNIS, MA—December 12, 2018
From garnering the coveted “golden ticket” on "American Idol" and placing fourth on the popular TV show in 2007 to the Broadway stage in the Oprah Winfrey-produced, Tony Award-winning musical, The Color Purple, LaKisha Jones is a powerhouse vocalist with magnetic energy.
Jones is making a return to the Cape Symphony stage for the New Year’s Day Party on January 1st after audiences fell in love with her during “Broadway Rocks!” in February 2018.
“LaKisha is a jaw-dropping show-stopper,” said Cape Symphony Artistic Director and Conductor Jung-Ho Pak. “Last time she was here, the audience gave her a standing ovation after many of her songs, which rarely ever happens. She’s a force of nature, and I can’t wait to get on stage with her!”
In her Broadway debut Jones played two roles in The Color Purple: that of “church lady” and of the pivotal character “Sophia.” The latter role she alternated with R&B icon Chaka Khan, who became her mentor. Flint Michigan native Jones recently returned to her home town to appear with the Flint Symphony Orchestra, launched a Whitney Houston tribute show called “To Whitney, With Love,” and joined the cast of Rocktopia on Broadway.
For the Cape Symphony’s New Year’s Day Party, Jones will pay tribute to the Great Divas in songs such as Whitney Houston’s “How Will I Know,” Aretha Franklin’s “Respect” and Donna Summer’s “Last Dance” – as well as a nod to Ella Fitzgerald with “Night and Day” and “I Got Rhythm.”
“Any one of these songs would be a challenge, but when you put them all together it’s an incredible feat. LaKisha has a way of singing all these very different, classic songs so you believe she’s the one who made them a hit,” said Pak.
The New Year’s Day Party will also include a sampling of the traditional light-hearted waltzes and marches and the Vienna Café will once again kick off the party. Delectable Viennese pastries made by Gourmet Caterers will be available for purchase from 1:30 to 2:45 PM in the senior cafeteria at the Barnstable Performing Arts Center. Audience members are encouraged to come early, enjoy coffee and pastry, and submit a New Year’s resolution, which Jung-Ho Pak may read during the concert.
