Jacques Lee Wood performs in Nth Degree concert

Cape Symphony’s Nth Degree Highlights the Cello in “Cellissimo”

Featuring dynamic cellist Jacques Lee Wood

HYANNIS, MA—February 23, 2018

From historically informed performances on baroque cello to commissioning and performing new works on modern and electric cello, Jacques Lee Wood has music in his soul.

Wood, Cape Symphony principal clarinetist Mark Miller and guest pianist Amy Yang will perform in a concert showcasing the capabilities of the cello to the Nth Degree in “Cellissimo” on Sunday, March 11 at 3:00 PM.

“Jacques is one of the most energetic and poetic cellists I’ve seen in a long time,” said Cape Symphony Artistic Director and Conductor Jung-Ho Pak. “He embodies the spirit of our own Cape Symphony players because he is more than just a musician, he’s a rock star at his craft.”

Wood, a graduate of the New England Conservatory and Yale, is the founding member of the Boston-based Antico Moderno, a period chamber ensemble that commissions new works for period instruments. He’s also one half of the duo StringLab, which produces original compositions, and a member of the NYC-based bluegrass band Cathedral Parkway, where he adopts a multi-faceted role as a vocalist, mandolin, banjo and cello player. A veritable “Jacques” of all trades, Wood is a musician not to be missed.

Another musical rock star the Cape Symphony calls its own is principal clarinetist Mark Miller. Miller will help bring Brahms’ “Trio for Clarinet, Cello & Piano,” one of Brahms’ last works, to life for “Cellissimo.” He conducts the Boston Youth Symphony Orchestra’s Repertory Orchestra, the Boston University All-Campus Orchestra, and the chamber orchestra at the Community Music Center in Boston. He is also a frequent performer with Nth Degree and a member of the wind quintet Arcadian Winds.

Joining the powerhouse team for “Cellissimo” is pianist Amy Yang. Hailed by The Washington Post as a “jaw-dropping pianist who [steals] the show,” Yang’s recent engagements include the National Youth Orchestra of USA, participating in the Mitsuko Uchida Workshop at Carnegie Hall, and a return to Weill Recital Hall.

All 2017|18 Nth Degree performances take place at the Federated Church of Orleans, 162 Main Street, East Orleans beginning at 3:00 PM.

Nth Degree tickets are $25, general admission. To purchase tickets online visit www.capesymphony.org or call the Cape Symphony Box Office at 508.362.1111.
