Cape Symphony presents Opera Without Words in January 2019

Experience the Emotional Power of Opera Music in “Opera Without Words”

Cape Symphony presents concert featuring music from Carmen and The Ring

HYANNIS, MA—January 3, 2019

Some of the most powerful music of opera is actually not sung, but played. In this unusual and unique event, the Cape Symphony will present beautiful and unforgettable symphonic moments of opera, letting the orchestra take center stage in Opera Without Words on Saturday, January 19 and Sunday, January 20.

With its mythic battle between the forces of good and evil, an inspiration for modern heroic sagas like Star Wars and The Lord of the Rings, Richard Wagner’s The Ring Cycle operas are legendary. The Cape Symphony will perform The Ring, An Orchestral Adventure, which is an extraordinary arrangement of the most compelling moments from these epic operas. The piece requires an enormous orchestra to support the larger-than-life music – over 80 musicians will take the Cape Symphony stage. Meanwhile, Ji-Hae Park, one of the most emotional and engaging violinists in the world will perform the fiery melodies from Bizet’s Carmen.

“These are two radical operas – incredibly insane attempts to create a new kind of theater,” said Cape Symphony Artistic Director and Conductor Jung-Ho Pak. “And while opera is so often associated with the lyrics sung in the theater experience, Opera Without Words will prove how powerful the music is and how important the orchestra is to the story.”

For violinist Ji-Hae Park music holds an even higher power. She used music to pull her through depression, and her passion for the music that saved her is evident every time she plays.

“She plays like a rock star, and sounds like an angel,” said Pak. “The Cape is incredibly lucky to hear her moving story and fiery musicality,” said Pak.

An honorary ambassador for the 2018 Winter Olympics in Pyeongchang, Ji-Hae Park will be appearing at a private event held by Gosnold for individuals and families who have experienced substance use or mental health disorders and the community treatment providers who care for them. Jung-Ho Pak will provide an introduction for the event and Cape Conservatory Executive Director Stephanie Weaver will provide piano accompaniment on January 21st at the Cotuit Center for the Arts. Ji-Hae’s story of her years of depression and how she came to a new understanding of the restorative power of music will be an inspiration to all who suffer with mental illness and addiction. Seating is limited, and is available for the Gosnold community. For more information and to RSVP, email Elizabeth de la Cour at This email address is being protected from spambots.
