Masterpiece 3

Come with us to the heart and soul of Vienna, a stunningly beautiful city which over the centuries has given rise to boundless musical brilliance. Your Cape Symphony Orchestra will perform some of its finest. Our captivating program opens with Arnold Schoenberg’s Chamber Symphony No. 2, a rich and expressive work that bridges the gap between tradition and modernism. We are then honored to welcome celebrated pianist Awadagin Pratt to the stage, bringing his exceptional insight and intensity to Mozart’s Piano Concerto No. 23, a masterpiece of elegance and lyrical beauty. After an intermission, Beethoven’s exhilarating Symphony No. 7 closes the afternoon with its irresistible energy and triumphant spirit. Don’t miss this wonderful voyage through Vienna’s legendary soundscape, right here on Cape Cod.

Awadagin Pratt, Piano

Award-winning musician Awadagin Pratt began studying piano at age six; at nine, he added violin. He is the only Johns Hopkins Peabody Institute student to have earned diplomas in three performance areas (piano, violin, and conducting).

Awadagin performs internationally to high critical acclaim. He has appeared at prestigious addresses including 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue (at the invitation of the Clinton and Obama administrations) and Sesame Street (at the invitation of Big Bird). He is Principal Conductor of the Miami Valley Symphony Orchestra, and has conducted the Chamber Orchestra of Pittsburgh, the Georgia Symphony Orchestra, the Greensboro Opera, and a concert featuring the music of jazz great Ornette Coleman with Bang on a Can at the Brooklyn Academy of Music.

Awadagin is a Professor of Piano at the San Francisco Conservatory and founding director of the Next Generation Festival, the Art of the Piano Foundation, and the Nina Simone Piano Competition, which showcases the tremendous talents of young Black pianists. He has received the Distinguished Alumni Award from Johns Hopkins University and honorary doctorates from Illinois Wesleyan University, Susquehanna University, and the Boston Conservatory.

Ticketholders are invited to a preconcert talk about the program, led by Assistant Conductor Joe Marchio. The talk begins one hour before the concert.
